Description of residency program
Thank you for your interest in a Spread Art residency. Spread Art's Artist Residency Program invites local, regional, national and international artists to develop and present work in Detroit. Below is a general overview of the program (all residencies are ultimately tailored to the individual artist's needs and interests).
Duration of residency
Between 2 weeks and two months.
Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Spread Art residencies provide housing, rehearsal and/or studio space, event and/or exhibition opportunities, and introductions to Detroit artists, venues, and more through residency dinners /brunches and additional social and networking opportunities.
Artists in residence stay at the three bedroom residency apartment on Rosa Parks Blvd in the Woodbridge neighborhood. Free laundry and wi-fi. All utilities included.
Rehearsal and studio space are generally provided at the Rosa Parks facility with a 900 square foot performance space, 5 artist studios, a 16 foot x 16 foot outdoor stage, 500 square foot gallery, community gardens, and more.
Fees and support
Spread Art works with each artist in advance to determine what event/exhibition support is needed and can be provided. Spread Art provides at least four fully subsidized (no cost to artists) residencies each year. In 2016 - 2017, four additional subsidized residencies are available to visual artists and literary arts who have a dependent under the age of 18 (made possible by grant funding from the Sustainable Arts Foundation). Additional residencies are 75% subsidized, with artists paying a portion of costs through an administrative fee of $250/week $400/2 weeks or $700/month. Spread Art is also a member of the worldwide network of artist residencies, Res Artis.
Expectations towards the artist
Artists are invited to a Spread Art residency to be free to create without the pressure of a public presentation. If the artist desires, each artist in residence can present a public workshop, artist talk, performance, exhibit, works in progress showing or another form of public presentation. Each artist is expected to create new work or continue on work that they have already started. Each artist is expected to use their studio regularly throughout the duration of their residency.
