The Bumbershoot Project
2003
This group was put together by Oxygen Music Collective director Thomas Bell for the Bumbershoot 2003 performance. For one hour on the Northwest Court Stage, at Seattle's annual Bumbershoot festival, these six individuals came together for the first and only time. For four members in the group, it was the first time they had played with two of the others. For two members it was the first time they had played with four of the others. From most perspectives, this was truly a first time meeting.
The gig included drummer Joe Russo, (Robert Walters, Benevento/Russo), Seattle sax great Jessica Lurie (Living Daylights, Billy Tipton Memorial Sax Quartet), Brad Houser (Critters Buggin, Edie Brickell) on bass clarinet, Seattle guitar master, Leif Totusek, the young keyboard wizard, Leif Dalan, and Thomas Bell on bass.
The group created a one hour set of completely improvised music.

Grunk?
2002
"sonic development ensemble"
Grunk happened over a short period of time during the early part of 2002. Five musical friends & five old roomates from Tallahassee, Florida, somehow found themselves getting together on Saturday mornings at the drummer's house for rehearsal in Seattle, Washington five years after they were all in Florida. They performed only five times.
Those five musicians - shesa / table:artist / L1 (sacred cow) / ap west / Zvi --
a.k.a. : (Franklin Mazzeo /Thomas Bell / Mike Leone / Andy West / Matt Segal) - set out to play a hybrid style of electro-acoustic-programed-improvised-sampled-live-free-structured-edgy-ambient-urban-experimental-type of music. They did just that over five performances spanning less than five months. The last live performance was May 6th 2002 at Oxygen Lounge experimental music showcase.
And Then...The Announcement...
-June 8th 2002 --- official announcement from Oxygen Music Collective:
"After a few gigs earlier this year, Grunk? has officially taken its last breath and will no longer be performing live."
The rest, ladies and gentlemen...is history.
