What Is Spread Art?
Spread Art is a “by artists, for artists” creative incubator designed to foster new creative work through residencies and collaborations with artists, curators, and arts organizations locally, nationally and internationally. Spread Art is a home to many Detroit based artists and serves as a place for the artistic community to experiment with new ideas, concepts and realizations and not be afraid to fail in the name of creative exploration.
Spread Art presents multidisciplinary art, music, dance, and performance events in Detroit and beyond. We focus on experimentation, innovation and collaboration across disciplines. We support work that pushes creative boundaries, incorporates technology, invites public participation, and/or explores immediately-relevant social themes.
Spread Art’s residency program is based in the historic Woodbridge neighborhood in Detroit, MI. Innovative artists across all artistic mediums are supported with housing, work space, exhibition opportunities, and more. Residencies vary from one week to two months or longer. Visiting artists are connected with Detroit’s creative community through residency dinners, artist talks, social gatherings, and teaching opportunities for youth and adults.
Spread Art artists in residence stay at our 3,500 sq ft facility that offers a multi-use, fully outfitted performance, rehearsal, exhibition and creative space with core program components that supports and fosters self-producing artists and artist-run organizations, which are critical to Detroit's vibrant arts community. Within the building are five artist studios, a three bedroom residency apartment, 900 sq ft rehearsal and performance space and a 600sq ft gallery. In addition the facility has a 9,000 sq ft outdoor garden and performance space with a 16ft X 12ft stage for use during the warmer months.
Spread Art was founded on Leap Day 2008 in Bushwick Brooklyn and relocated to Detroit in Jan 2012 and has operated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization since December 2012. Spread Art is guided by a five member Board of Directors and an artist advisory committee.
