Spread Art directors Thomas Bell and Christina deRoos installed Numbers, an installation that highlights human costs of the conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan that are rarely reported in mainstream media.See photos of the process of installation as well as the final result here.
The
installation consists of flag draped coffins and numbers stenciled on
paper then covered with bubble wrap. The width and placement give
viewers a choice between walking across and popping bubbles or making a
small but extra effort to jump across and avoid interacting. This
parallels the ability those of us in the United States have to avoid
witnessing the impact of the government policies carried out in our
name. It requires a bit of effort, although not much, to avoid the
messy reality of our ongoing policies in Iraq and Afghanistan.
*****
Numbers used include:
32,907 Weight in tons of bombs dropped by the U.S. Air force in Iraq & Afghanistan through 2007
6129 American and coalition military casualties in Iraq & Afghanistan
120 American military casualties since Obama was inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2009
46% The percentage of air raid casualties that are women are girls
766 The number of journalists and academics that have been killed in Iraq
1395 The number of contractor employee deaths in Iraq
102,083 Documented civilian deaths from violence in Iraq (Estimate is 93,552-102,083)
39% The percentage of air raid casualties that are children
>100 thousand The number of American military wounded
$7500 The amount the U.S. Army paid to two children whose mother was killed inside a taxi
that ran a checkpoint. Both children were also in the taxi, and were
shot and injured.
Thank you to Iraq Body Count, AntiWar, andiCasualties for maintaining databases that make these and many more numbers readily available.
*****
Popping bubble wrap generally evokes enthusiasm from people regardless of age. With Numbers,
the excitement of walking, jumping, or otherwise popping bubbles is
tempered by the reality of stepping on representations of victims of
violence.
Numbers
also presents an opportunity for participants to reflect upon the
myriad impacts of war, including responses to loud or surprising
sounds, such as the pops of bubble wrap. For child and adult survivors of war, loud noises can trigger intrusive memories, nightmares,
hallucinations or flashbacks, sometimes resulting in exaggerated responses. As one Iraq veteran explains, "any little noise and I'd jump out of bed and run around the house with
a gun."
In the same way, the sound of an airplane flying overhead can cause
stress for survivors of aerial bombings, while it is of no consequence
to others.
Lastly, Numbers
is provides a visual reference point for the ongoing violence as the
total number of bubbles in the installation is approximately the same
as the total number of tons of bombs that have been dropped on Iraq and
Afghanistan to date.

The
September Concert is a series of free concerts, organized by
individuals, schools, businesses, and associations to bring communities
together, to reaffirm our hope for peace and to celebrate life and our
universal humanity. Concerts are held in all areas of our city, our nation, our world. It is a global day of music for peace, every September 11th.
Spread Art will be participating for the second consecutive year with a
live music performance by The Tronic, a highly charged futuristic music performance duo, with ice sculptures by Empire Ice.
Formed in 2008 as an improvisational live
jazz-tronic band w/ DJ sensibilities and instrumental proficiency.
Gregg Jarvis (nyc) utilizes drums and electronics along with Thomas
Bell (nyc) on basses and synthesizers to create soundscapes, grooves
and other worldly nastiness. Gregg and Thomas have been exploring live
improvised instrument looping since they began playing together in
2003. Their unique approach to improvisation
blurs the lines between the live musician, the composer and the dj.
The Tronic is truly a forward-thinking modern jazz ensemble.

Castle Braid will present the first incarnation of BROOKLYN ARTILLERY, bringing together the best of Brooklyn Arts and Music in the apartments of the new Castle Braid Building at 114 Troutman in Bushwick. The exhibition will be launched with a two-night launch event showcasing the collective power of Brooklyn’s best creative minds. The galleries of the Williamsburg Gallery Association will populate the open apartments and chic garden duplexes of Castle Braid with works by up-and- coming and established artists. Some will reinvent and reimagine the blank canvas of a living space; others will create a bona fide miniature gallery with wine and cheese receptions and a curated rotation of works. On the ground floor and in the landscaped shade of the enclosed courtyard, performers will treat guests to a living, breathing artistic / musical experience, while on designated walls specially invited street and graffiti artists notorious to our neighborhood will have the freedom to transform without the threat of repercussion.
ARTILLERY is our answer to the art fairs of Basel and Armory, but more than that - the name covers a cache of ongoing creative events and happenings that will take place throughout the building and neighborhood in general. Yoga and dance workshops, film festivals in Castle Braid's new mini-theater, screen-printing parties and figure drawing sessions are just a few of the treats in store in the year to come.

"Encouraging children to photograph the world through their eyes"
Spread Art will host a fundraiser for The Eyes of Hope Project. On display will be photographs from the children from Rawanda.
Eye of Hope Mission
• to provide photography classes as a means of art therapy to children around the world • to allow children to tell their own stories through their photographs • to provide a local trade to help children pay for school fees and food • to celebrate and affirm children’s creativity by exhibiting their photographs in different venues throughout the world • to bring awareness of different cultures to communities through the children’s photographs
Photojournalist Linda Smith first traveled to Rwanda
in 2006 where she spent much of her time behind the camera. The
Rwandans were captivated by the photographs that Linda took since many
of the children and adults she photographed had never seen an image of
themselves. Linda recognized the potential that the camera held for the
children, by not only providing them with documentation of their lives
but also allowing them to experience a sense of joy and fun.
When she returned to the United States,
Linda began researching photograph-based projects for children. She
wanted to develop an art program for children that utilized photography
and had the potential to be successfully conducted in third world
countries. As a result of her research and vision, the Through the eyes
of Hope Project was born in 2007.The
project has two goals-to teach basic photographic principles to
extremely disadvantaged children and to educate children who are
interested in learning about the children of other cultures.
